Canton has also been enhanced with new residential homes and condominiums.
The Canton housing market is approximately 20 miles east of Ann Arbor, 35 miles west of Detroit, and 50 miles north of Toledo, Ohio. It has convenient access to I-275, Michigan's busiest expressway, and I-96, which connects Detroit to Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Grand Rapids.
The majority of Canton's commercial area is situated on Ford Road west of I-275. IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings retailer, opened its store in Canton during the summer of 2006. More than two million shoppers are expected to visit each year. The store encompasses 311,000 square feet in two stories. It is located on 21 acres at Haggerty Road and Ford Road, near I-275. The store features a 300-seat restaurant, 1,100 parking spaces, and a supervised play area for children.
Canton Community Amenities
Opportunities and amenities for neighborhood recreation are plentiful in Canton. Leisure Services is the 2008 winner of the National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. Canton has great neighborhood recreational areas including the Canton Sports Center and one stop shopping at Summit on the Park.
The center of community recreation, Summit on the Park, is recognized throughout the southeastern Michigan area for its unique recreational programs and services as well as its quality full-service banquet facilities. The Summit, a 95,000-square-foot facility, offers a full-service fitness center, an aquatics area, a gymnasium, an indoor running track, racquetball courts, and dance studios. The $16 million complex, located in the heart of the community in the beautiful 105-acre Heritage Park, includes a wide array of outstanding cultural and recreational amenities. Its unique design is topped by a 75-foot high glass tower and massive copper and glass superstructure.
Leaders in the community continue to place a great emphasis on developing open space and park areas for the use and enjoyment of the public. Canton is home to two golf courses: Fellows Creek Golf Course offers 27 holes and Pheasant Run Golf Course currently features 18 holes.
The community also plays host to many special events throughout the year. Liberty Fest continues to be Canton's most popular annual festival and is joined throughout the year by October Fest, a summer concert series in Heritage Park, the annual Fishing Derby, Marshmallow Drop, and other neighborhood events for all ages. Canton's Heritage Park hosts a summer-long weekly Music in the Park every year. Thursday nights a variety of bands from country & western to jazz entertain the Canton residents. Canton is also home to the Canton Sports Center which is at the heart of Victory Park located on Michigan Avenue. Canton Sports Center features 12 lighted ball fields with 300 foot fences and covered bleacher seating. Families are welcome to enjoy the open space, a kids playscape, a full service restaurant (Diamond's Bar & Grill), outdoor patios, and concessions. Canton is also home to the Arctic Edge Of Canton Ice Skating Rink, which is an indoor rink open year-round that offers a number of hockey and figure skating programs, as well as open skating, all open to the public.
Canton is home to many national franchise restaurants as well, including TGI Friday's, Max & Erma's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, and Chili's, many of which are located on Ford Road west of I-275.

Canton is not short of things to do for people of all ages.
- Cherry Hills Village - From seasonal farmers markets to outdoor concerts, Cherry Hills Village is a charming part of Canton where you can shop, eat, and do business locally. The Village Theater is a 400-seat venue that offers everything from stand-up comedy to theater to art exhibits.
- Ford Road Public Art Exhibition - This public art display changes regularly and is color-coded providing all those who drive down the road a visual reference.
- Summit on the Park - This community center is a focal point in the Canton community. Offering classes, special events, and programs, the Summit is a true staple for the growing Canton population.
Canton School Information
Education is very important to Canton. Its first public school opened in 1830 inside a log cabin.
Canton is served by three school districts: the Plymouth-Canton Community School District, the Van Buren School District, and the Wayne-Westland Community School District. Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, a district that enrolls over 16,000 students and is comprised of 21 elementary, seven middle, and four high schools, serves the major part of the community. Students in the district consistently score higher than the state average on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP).
The Canton housing market is also home to several private schools, including All Saints Catholic School, Plymouth Christian Academy, Agape Christian Academy, and Plymouth Canton Montessori. Plymouth-Canton Educational Park encompasses three public secondary schools: Salem High School, Canton High School, and Plymouth High School. PCEP is located on a 305 acre (1.23 km2) campus in Wayne County. The schools operate a joint academic program and, for most sports, individual athletic programs.
Canton Historical Facts
When you think about Guangzhou, China, you may not think it has anything to do with Canton, Michigan, but you would be wrong. There was a Michigan law back in the 1800s that wouldn't allow a post office to have the same name as any other post office in existence. The original intent was to call the city Guangzhou after the city in China, but since they had a post office, they used the English translation: Canton.
Throughout most of Canton's history, they have remained a small community. In 1961, there were only about 5,300 residents within the six square miles. It was at this time that the need for services began to increase, so they turned the community into a township so that they could establish a police force, traffic rules, and build up other services.
While mostly a farming community, Canton had two village areas known as Sheldon Corners and Cherry Hill Village. Fighting the increasing population growth, both of these small areas within Canton retain historic sites but widened streets and new homes have added modern conveniences, overshadowing their historic significance.
